Underwriting

« Back to Glossary Index

Underwriting is the process an insurance company uses to evaluate the risk of a potential customer and decide how much premium to charge. In 2026, underwriters use advanced data, credit-based insurance scores, and even high-resolution satellite imagery to “police” a property before accepting it. If an underwriter finds red flags, like an old roof or a history of multiple claims, they may reject the application or add restrictive endorsements that limit the carrier’s future payout.
